The paintings of Richard Walker depict dramatic, urban cityscapes eerily reflected in harsh neon lights, electrifying skies, or sometimes, icy pools of light. He works with acrylic, pastels and spray paint to achieve maximum impact and appropriate textural effect. "In my work, I try to communicate not only the positive energies and excitement of city life but, also, the underlying dangers and feeling of unease that are also present." Lecturing since 1976 in printmaking, drawing and design at various art colleges including Camberwell, Chelsea, Kingston and Brighton, Walker balances his academic work with commissions of a more commercial nature including animation and art direction for television advertisements and promotional films. In addition to various mural commissions in London, Walker has been commissioned by Tatler, Virgin Airways, the London Tourist Board, London Contemporary Arts, Trusthouse Forte (Excelsior Hotel, Heathrow) and the Century Group of Hotels. His painting are held in the collections of the British Council, Hammersmith and Fulham, Sheffield City Art Gallery, Citicorp Bank, Cleveland City Art Gallery, RCA Corporation and Westinghouse USA.
